MERMAID SPECIES
OCEAN MERMAID
Ocean mermaids are the most common mermaid and show up a lot in popular culture. These mermaids travel the most and can go just about anywhere(except bodies of fresh water). Most travel in pods, like dolphins. These pods are usually made of 30-50 merpeople. Ocean mermaids usually have large flukes for swimming long distances and countershading to avoid predators. Having the largest population ocean mermaids have varying personalities.
ARCTIC MERMAID
Arctic mermaids tend to be the most secluded given their habitat. These mermaids usually have white or light blue tails to blend in with the water. Most have a thick layer of fat or blubber to stay warm. Arctic mermaids are guaranteed to have a diet of all fish because plants grow near most polar regions. Most will have sharper claws(fingers?) and teeth for hunting and defense against predators. Their flukes will usually be medium-sized since they do not need to travel as much.
TROPICAL MERMAID
Tropical mermaids can usually be found in warm places(not deserts). They typically have small smaller flukes since they usually stay close to the coasts and reefs. A tropical mermaid's diet usually consists of fish and local fruit. Unlike other mermaids, tropical mermaids don't have the layers of blubber of fat that most other mermaids have. Most will have brightly colored tails to blend in with the reefs. Tropical mermaids are usually friendly and always travel in pods and have a sunny view of life.
FRESHWATER MERMAID
Most fresh water mermaids live in ponds, lakes, rivers, and stream. Fresh water mermaids will usually have skin tinted to match the water they live in. Their fluke size will vary depending on the body of water. Their tail color will usually depend on the color and clarity of the water. Fresh water mermaids are the most sociable of all mermaids. Given their habitat, freshwater mermaids can choose weather to become a carnivore, herbivore, or omnivore.
DEEP SEA MERMAID
Most deep-sea mermaids go solo and don't travel in packs. Deep-sea mermaids have adjusted for the darkness. They are very territorial and rarely travel. Most will have large flukes to swim faster. Deep-sea mermaids tend to have dark blue, purple, or black tails. All deep-sea mermaids terrific hunting skills and some even glow like anglerfish.
SIRENS
Contrary to popular belief, sirens are not always evil. Sirens are part of Greek mythology using their beautiful voices for good and bad purposes. Sirens don't have tails but are still excellent swimmers. Sirens use their voice for defense because they have a small population and don't travel.
SIRENA CHILOTA
Sirena Chilotas are golden tailed mermaids from chilean mythology and love to help everyone.As far as recorded, sirenas are never evil and are usually sent deities. Sirenas are tasked with protecting all the fish and are herbivores because of it All sirenas have large flukes to travel long distances. They are stronger than most mermaids since they have to carry people away from tragedies. In addition their magic is also very power and their tears are commonly used for spells.
MERROW
Merrows are Irish sea fairies similar to mermaids but, their appearance may vary. All merrows will have a green tail. Most merrows will have a hat or comb that allows them to transform. If a merrow loses this item they lose the ability to transform in their mermaid form. Merrows are commonly found near Ireland and Europe and don't travel as much.
AICAYA
Aicayas are a type of Caribbean mermaid with teal or aqua tails. Most will have a small or medium-sized fluke because they don't usually leave the Caribbean. Most become Aicayas because they feel cast out or unwanted. Aicayas have the most diverse stories and personalities and are all accepted.
CECAELIA
A Cecaelia is half-human-half-octopus sea creature. Cecaelia are solitary and territorial creatures. Usually there will be one cecaelia per body of water with the exception of oceans. Contrary to popular culture, cecaelia are not witches. Cecaelia may have powers, but usually they craft weapons. Most cecaelia dislike humans and will stop at nothing to protect their territory and inhabitants.
